Sports enthusiasts and athletes in the Moqhaka Local Municipality are taking part in the Mayoral games in the Free State town of Kroonstad today, four years after the games were phased out.

Mayor, Lucky Phooko, tells OFM News, bringing the games back forms part of his first hundred days in office and will also kick-start the municipality’s Mandela Month plans. It is not clear how many participants will be at Kananelo Secondary School in Maokeng today, but Phooko confirms they are from Kroonstad, Viljoenskroon and Steynsrus.

Those interested will be able to take part in a number of sporting codes including, soccer, boxing, volley and chess. The games are intended in part to identify talent amongst disadvantaged young people.  “Part of it is to bring the community together, also to make sure there’s stability and unity” says Phooko.

Prior to the May national elections, the Moqhaka Local Municipality was one of the identified hotspots in the province, as unrest flared up in the area of service delivery concerns. Phooko aims to work on those very concerns in his 100 days.

The finals in each sporting code will take place around 15:00 after which a prize giving ceremony will take place.
