#FSbudget: 'Towns to be cleaned every Friday' | News Article

Massive cleaning campaigns are set to be undertaken by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the Free State with the hope of cleaning the dirt with the towns in the province.

This is according to the Cogta MEC, Thembeni Ngxangisa, who delivered his 2019/20 financial budget vote speech in the provincial Legislature on Thursday 11, July 2019.

This follows after rigorous complaints by residents across Mangaung, which include Bloemfontein, where waste is often found lying on the streets of Mangaung uncollected. He says his department will be engaging across the different spheres of government to achieve this.

Ngxangisa says every Friday, the streets of the province will be attended to and cleaned and he further pleaded with all members of the Legislature to assist the department in lobbying support for the initiative.

He said that both the Community Work Programme (CWP), amongst others, who are located under the provincial department of Cogta will undertake random cleaning campaigns. Ngxangisa says they launched the Andy Sefohleho cleaning campaign Thursday 11 July 2019.

"As we leave the town, we would request that the municipality maintains the cleaning." Tabling his R456 million budget, Nxangisa outlined that a substantial amount of this money will not only be used to capacitate their human resources, support the many cited and cash-strapped municipalities, but also used to improve water and sanitation infrastructure.

Nxangisa alluded that the provincial department will onwards work hand-in-hand with the national department to ensure clean drinkable water and eradicate the bucket system. In addition to measures that will be taken to ensure that communities are provided with these needs and that their hygiene is prioritised.
