UFS classes resume following commotion─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:11 Mon, 15 Jul 2019
The University of the Free State (UFS) says classes will resume as planned for the third term this morning after a commotion broke out outside the Bloemfontein Campus this past weekend.
The commotion, which allegedly relates to the EFF Student Command 3rd National Assembly that was held at the university on Saturday, saw a number of passing vehicles being pelted with rocks in the Brandwag area outside the campus. Although it remains unknown what could have led to the commotion and whether the culprits seen wearing red berets and T-shirts were indeed EFF members, the university’s spokesperson, Lacea Loader, says no incidents occurred on the campus for the duration of the conference, and the proceedings were conducted in an orderly manner. OFM News’ Katleho Morapela reports thirteen people were arrested.
The police in Bloemfontein are currently investigating a case of malicious damage to property after the disgruntled group attempted to force their way into the conference venue at the university.
According to the university, “the EFF security commander received intelligence that people were bused to the campus to disrupt the event, and therefore deployed some of their security members to the gates of the university to assist UFS security in preventing the group from forcing themselves onto the campus. The supporters were refused entry and subsequently tried to force their way in. A scuffle ensued between EFF security team members and the unauthorised group, after which they moved towards Nelson Mandela Drive and Bloem Gate where they apparently threw stones at vehicles”.
