Protests have erupted on the N12 road at Klerksdorp near Jouberton and Alabama in the North West this morning. However, there are conflicting reports about the details of the protests in that area.

This as OFM News was told that local contractors are up in arms against the local Matlosana Municipality which includes the town, while the police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, says according to information at this stage service delivery issues might have influenced the protests.

The local Community Policing Forum (CPF) says according to the information available to them, local contractors are protesting against the municipality because they have not been given work by the municipality. Pictures of burning tyres and a lot of smoke can be seen on the scene.

This comes a few days after calm was restored to Letsopa near Ottosdal following days of serious unrest in the area. Residents are said to have burned the Traffic Department's offices and set the boardroom of the local municipality on fire when residents protested over a lack of service delivery, which includes bad roads, the lack of sports infrastructure, ongoing water shortages, and corruption.

The Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation MEC, Virginia Tlhapi, has previously also condemned the destruction of a multi-million rand library in the area during violent protests that erupted last week.

The Letsopa community library was a state-of-the-art library that included a toy library for kids and a library for the blind, estimated at R12 million. In April this year, irate residents burned and destroyed the infrastructure and looted foreign-owned shops in that area. Residents of extension 10 went on the rampage looting shops in protest of a lack of service delivery, amongst other reasons.
