Situation calm in NW following protests─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:07 Tue, 16 Jul 2019
Normalcy has returned in the North West following unrest. This, after community members and local contractors yesterday embarked on protest action on the N12 road near Jouberton and Alabama.
The group, which barricaded the road with stones and burning tyres, were allegedly up in arms over service delivery issues, a lack of employment opportunities and maladministration by the local Matlosana Municipality. Police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, confirms the road has now been re-opened and the situation is calm. She says no arrests were made and they are still keeping a close eye on these areas.
The protests in this region ensued just days after calm was restored to Letsopa near Ottosdal following days of protests. Residents in this area have reportedly burned the Traffic Department's offices and set the boardroom of the local municipality alight when residents protested over a lack of service delivery. The town also made news when residents set alight a local library which had recently been refurbished at more than R12 million costs.
