Makgoe to address education issues in #FSbudget | News Article

Issues relating to a lack of infrastructure at schools, scholar transport, a lack of schools for children with special needs, a lack of teacher development, and other key issues faced in the Free State, will come under scrutiny today.

Questions regarding the number of pit latrines in many schools across the province is another key issue that he is expected to address when the MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, tables his budget.

According to the latest Sanitation Audit conducted by the Basic Department of Education, there is still a huge challenge with unsafe pit toilets, including the need to build new facilities and to destroy old unsafe facilities at various schools across the country.

The report indicates that a large number of schools with pit latrines only and unacceptable sanitation are still mainly found in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, while over 150 of these schools are found in the Free State and 145 in the North West.

Makgoe will this morning be expected to outline how he plans to address these issues. His department, together with the Health Department, are the two departments that year-on-year receives the bulk of the provincial budget.
