The MEC of the Free State Police, Roads and Transport Department, Sam Mashinini, says he will in the 2019/20 financial year focus his efforts on ensuring that roads that connect the province to other provinces are well maintained.

Those roads currently under construction will also be completed.

Speaking to members of the provincial government, the legislature and guests earlier this morning in the Fourth Raadsaal in Bloemfontein, Mashinini revealed during his budget speech that some roads in the province have already been completed.

These include the Hoopstad to Bultfontein, Wepener to Dewetsdorp, as well as the Bothaville to Viljoenskroon roads, while he stated that the route between Ventersburg to Senekal will also receive his attention. He stated that this road was initially supposed to have been completed in the previous financial year but the P33/2 road which goes from Bothaville to Viljoenskroon then took priority owing to the fact that it has more traffic and this route is more economically viable to fix.

The Democratic Alliance in the province in September last year raised their concern with the completion of some of these roads that Mashinini mentioned earlier today, some of which have been under construction since 2016, and accused his department of political interference. The opposition party stated that this was among one of the key reasons why these roads were not completed on time.

Among other plans he has for roads, particularly those in the townships, rural areas and on farms, Mashinini said there would be a revitalisation of township roads so that access to these areas is increased. This will be done by ensuring that poorly maintained roads in the townships are paved. Areas he mentioned that will benefit from the paving, among others, include Botshabelo's Ward 37 and Cornelia, while he said Zastron's township roads will receive patchwork.

Meanwhile, he also adds that over 100 kilometres of roads on farms in and around the province will be re-gravelled.
