#FSbudget: Overcrowded primary schools in spotlight─── PULANE CHOANE 16:28 Tue, 16 Jul 2019
Plans are afoot to reduce the high learner-teacher ratio that exists particularly at public primary schools in the Free State province.
This is according to the MEC of the Provincial Education Department, Tate Makgoe, who said this forms part of his department's Primary Schools Turnaround Strategy in improving teaching, numeracy and literacy at primary schooling levels.
Speaking at the Fourth Raadsaal in Bloemfontein, where he earlier delivered his budget vote speech for the 2019/20 financial year, Makgoe said this strategy to boost skills imparted on learners in the foundation phase, will be implemented over the next three years.
In addition to conducting quarterly accountability sessions, among several other measures that will be undertaken by the department as part of this strategy, Makgoe says the department will also provide resources such as Maths kits, Robotics kits and National Science Mobile Laboratories for 75 primary schools in the province. "For the first time we will provide Primary Schools with recorded IBP DVDs containing maths, science and English First Additional Language (EFAL) lessons for grades 3 to 6," Makgoe added.
