MEC lauds SAPS, NPA, and community relationship─── LUCKY NKUYANE 11:52 Fri, 19 Jul 2019
The MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, has lauded the relationship between stakeholders, which includes residents in rural areas, and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
This after the provincial commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe, on Friday 18 July 2019 announced that significant arrests were made in a short space of time and heavy convictions were made with the assistance of these said stakeholders.
Mashinini says his department has no time to waste and they will continue to make sure that all the perpetrators who are continuing with their heinous crimes against farm owners and workers, will feel the pinch of the police. He says during his 2019/20 financial budget vote speech he emphasised that the issues of accessibility in areas, seen as a safe haven for perpetrators, was being addressed by his department and others.
Mashinini handed over a fleet of 48 new vehicles to the South African Police Services at an event held at the Glen Agricultural College as part of concerted efforts to combat farm murders across the province. Mashinini says his department has realised that this was a serious challenge for the police in terms of accessibility in some areas, such as the neighbouring country of Lesotho, to where most perpetrators flee.
Mashinini says the recent successful arrests of suspects in the Boshof farm murder incident indicates how the relation between residents can take the province forward. Sempe further says the police was worried about the farm murders across the province. He says a multidisciplinary task team was established and this led to the swift arrest of five suspects with one still on the large.
He announced that an emerging farmer in Mafube was killed with his throat slit and through the help of a shepherd the suspect was arrested in no time.
