Premier officially launched sport festival─── 15:20 Fri, 19 Jul 2019
Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, officially launched the 2019 Kimberley Diamond Cup Action Sport Festival this morning.
He stated that there are currently 500 000 people visiting the Northern Cape annually and they want to increase the number by utilising sports tourism.
Saul further said that between 2013 and 2016, R140 million was invested in skating in the Northern Cape because he believes that this will become the mecca of extreme sport with skateboarding, mountain biking and track events. He explained that with this investment they’ve made 3 176 temporary jobs available, mostly for young people, and managed to build one of the best skating infrastructures in the country.
He went on to say that during this time the government brought 60 000 fans of the sport to the province as well as 224 professional international skateboarders, who have managed to make major strides in the sport and this year the expectations are even higher.
