Protest action has erupted in the Kanana township, between Orkney and Klerksdorp in the North West, over the construction of a nearby solar power plant.

Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says disgruntled residents have been mobilising and barricading roads in the township with burning tyres and rocks since 04:00 am on Friday morning. She maintains no national roads have been blocked and no damages have been reported as yet. According to Myburgh, public order police are on the scene, keeping a close eye on the situation.

She says police are clearing the roads of the barricades, however, the groups are moving around the township and causing disruption elsewhere. The unrest is concentrated in Kanana and there is no total shutdown as alleged in a flyer circulated by the disgruntled group yesterday.

While police are unable to elaborate on the exact reasons behind the unrest, OFM News has been reliably informed that a group called the Kanana Community Representative is unhappy with the hiring process at the solar plant located near the Tau Lekoa mine. It’s alleged a large number of the people employed on-site are from neighbouring Leeudoringstad as opposed to Kanana, angering the community. There is also the matter of service delivery in the embattled municipality of late.
