Two historic Celtic books launched─── 12:58 Wed, 07 Aug 2019
Despite encountering several problems in the last few years, including protests, match boycotts, and pitch invasions that led to scores of fans arrested, the Bloemfontein Celtic supporters, however, continue to set the trend in South African Sport.
This follows the recent launch of the book “Dance Siwelele” at the Central University of Technology (CUT). The book, believed to be the first in the South African soccer fraternity, traces the founding generation of owners, players and the uniqueness of its loyal supporters, who are regarded as the best supporters in the country for their singing and dancing.
For their passion and vibrancy, the supporters, several years ago, won the Best Supporters Award of the Premier Soccer League twice in a row.
During the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, international media documented the story of the fans after they were impressed with their unbelievable passion for the game.
Another book titled “Resilient Ntate Molemela” was also launched. The book is a biography of the late Dr. Petrus Molemela, who owned and managed Celtic for more than two decades. These two books were authored by Molefi Mika, a seasoned sports journalist and former Sowetan sports editor, and Teboho Setena, editor of the Express Newspaper.
“Resilient Ntate Molemela” looks at the life of Molemela growing up on a farm without formal education to be a well-known entrepreneur, community worker and owner of Celtic.
In 2006, CUT awarded Molemela an honorary degree for his contribution to sports development in South Africa.
In partnering the launch of the two books, the CUT vice-chancellor and principal, prof. Henk de Jager, said in a statement that Molemela was a fearless sports administrator who made significant contributions to the soccer fraternity in South Africa. He also added that Celtic fans’ singing and dancing style is unmatched in the whole country.
