NW police confirm driver’s death in school taxi accident | News Article

A minibus taxi allegedly carrying two dozen learners collided head-on with another taxi between Klerksdorp and Jouberton township via the Ellaton suburb in the North West this morning, leaving one person dead.

Police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, confirms it is, in fact, a driver who has died and not a school child as earlier reported by authorities. Chairperson of the Road Incident Management System in the Kenneth Kaunda District, Vusi Mohlakore, tells OFM News they received information on the accident just after 07:00 am. Mohlakore says two of the learners are in a critical condition, while 15 others are in a serious but stable condition. He says the learners have been transported to Life Anncron Hospital as well as Tshepong Hospital for further treatment.

According to Mohlakore, the learners were being transported to Milner High School, Keurhof School, Tegniese Hoërskool, and Educators High School in Klerksdorp. He says parents should contact the owner of the minibus taxi, Marumo Moholo, on 072-813-1206 to get an update. They can also go to the aforementioned hospitals or nearest police stations for assistance.

OFM News is in possession of pics of the accident, which reveal the minibus taxi is a 16-seater Toyota Quantum vehicle. Botma would not comment on whether or not the minibus taxi was overloaded, referring all queries to the North West Traffic Division.
