Government criticised over #Marikana─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:25 Fri, 16 Aug 2019
The South African Government is once again at the centre of heavy criticism from citizens over the deadly Marikana massacre that happened seven years ago in the North West.
Friday 16 August marks seven years since the tragic incident when police shot and killed 34 people when they opened fire on striking mineworkers. But prior to the incident that shocked the world, ten other people were killed. Many took to Twitter and Facebook to express their disappointment with the government for having failed to hold those who are linked to the murder of miners accountable.
OFM News previously reported that former NW deputy police commissioner, William Mpembe, and three other policemen recently appeared before the North West High Court over the Marikana incident.
President of Amcu, Joseph Mathunjwa, recently told eNCA that the situation for mineworkers has not significantly changed.
"If the economic policies are still skewed as it is and still favour the business, [then] capital comes before the lives of workers," he said. "You are still seeing each mine killing 21 breadwinners without any consequences of these mine fatalities.” And even though we try to campaign for the amendments of the Mine Health and Safety Act, the government is very reluctant,” Mathunjwa told eNCA.
