Windy season leads to FS veld fires | News Article

The public is urged to be extra vigilant during the windy season in Central SA, as veld fires spread rapidly due to increasing winds.

Working on Fire spokesperson, Wayne Mokhethi, tells OFM News 16 veld fires were recorded in parts of the Free State in the last few days, adding many veld fires were burning concurrently, as much as three at once.

He says no casualties were reported during the fires and asks residents to report any fires to their nearest fire station. Mokhethi says they have increased area patrol during the fire season across the province.

Mokhethi says the team was dispatched to various parts of the province where veld fires broke out, adding Bloemfontein recorded the highest number of fires at eight,  while Clarens experienced four, Golden Gate two, and Qwaqwa and Marquard recorded one fire each this past weekend.

He says that is common this time of the year due to dry and windy weather that veld fires peak due to windy weather.

He says no casualties were reported during the fires and further urged residents to report any fires to their nearest fire station.

Mokhethi also warned residents about the danger of fires and says they have increased area patrol during the fire season across the province.
