Taxi monitoring committee appointed - GP─── 14:01 Tue, 20 Aug 2019
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is confident that the first provincial taxi monitoring committee, convened by MEC Jacob Mamabolo on Monday, will help with implementing the resolutions agreed upon at last month's provincial taxi summit.
This after resolutions of the 2016 taxi summit turned fruitless, as both taxi associations, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), and the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA), failed to implement resolutions of the summit.
Departmental spokesperson, Theo Nkonki, told OFM News that resolutions included changing taxi driver's bad behaviour on the roads, which sometimes cause accidents.
The two-day summit, which was held in July in the Vaal, agreed that the provincial government working with the taxi industry, should commit to modernise the industry through technology and ensuring that peace and stability contribute in growing the Gauteng economy.
Nkonki says the monitoring committee will meet once a month to check on drivers’ behaviour and whether other resolutions are being implemented by the two associations.
