SA Army faces capacity and financial constraints - Yam | News Article

The Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lindile Yam, says they are hopeful soldiers’ deployment to the Western Cape will not be expanded to other provinces.

Responding to OFM News’ inquiry on their state of readiness to combat crime in gang-ridden areas, Yam highlighted that crime prevention is the mandate of the SAPS and they will assist however they can when called to do so. He, however, remains hopeful that their members will not be deployed to do the work of the police.

Speaking to OFM News at the Mangaung Metro Municipality, where the army’s top officials held a two-day meeting, Yam reiterated that they exist to protect the country, implement peacekeeping operations, and invest more efforts in beefing up security around the country’s borders. He highlighted that they don’t have the capacity and financial means to carry out this operation to other gang-ridden provinces.

Yam added that although South Africa is currently not at war, there are many security challenges that require the SANDF’s assistance, including border security and maritime security, with thousands of undocumented persons crossing the borders - some with illegal goods.

The deployment to Cape Town is authorised until September 16.
