Actor turned director brings movie to Bloem audiences | News Article

Popular soapie actor, Kagiso Modupe, says he hopes that his new motion picture, Losing Lerato, will convey to audiences the importance of co-parenting and how it is always the children that suffer when parents fight.

Speaking to OFM News, Modupe says it took him over three years to get the movie on big screens and after struggling with finding funders, he then sold everything he had so that his dream of having a movie he came up with will be realised. He acts alongside his 9-year-old daughter and adds that he hopes the movie will spark conversations about child access, custody and maintenance.

The movie, which features new faces as well as an all-star South African actor cast, will be aired in Bloemfontein at the Loch Logan Mall’s Nu Metro Cinema on 13 September.

Modupe says through the movie, which was among the finalists at the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SAVFF), he is gunning for international greats like Hollywood actor, Will Smith, to take note of the production and watch it. This as Smith in 2007, also alongside his son, Jaden, acted in a similar movie, based on a true story, titled the Pursuit of Happiness. The film which Smith and his son starred in, showcases Smith as Chris Gardner, who is a struggling single father forced to seek shelter for him and his son as they are homeless. Modupe says Smith is but one one of the few people he hopes will take notice of this film, with which he also intends to bag prestigious awards. “Honestly, I’m chasing the Oscars and I’d also love to win an award on home ground at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs),” Modupe says. Modupe is a South African actor best known for his role as Mangi Nyathi on the e.tv soapie Scandal! He joined the production with its debut in 2005 and by 2018 he was the last original remaining cast member. In March 2018, Medupe announced his departure from the show, which he says he left to pursue his other career aspirations.
