NC Education sets aside over R600 million for infrastructure | News Article

Residents in the Northern Cape will soon breathe a sigh of relief as the Provincial Department of Education sets aside R647 million for infrastructure development.

The department is with this budget, amongst others, expected to soon complete seven schools that are being refurbished and launch two new ones at the beginning of the academic year in 2020.

MEC Mac Jack has on Tuesday, during the tabling of his budget vote before the provincial legislature, announced that schools’ infrastructure development in the province has become one of his top priorities.

The province is amongst those that have been making headlines at the beginning of each year over unplaced learners in the John Taolo and Frances Baard Districts. His commitment to improve school infrastructure also comes just days after a fire destroyed a significant portion of the Theron High School in Britstown on Monday.

Nine classrooms, four restrooms, the kitchen, and seven storage rooms were destroyed in a fire and affected the grade 12’s preliminary exams.

The department is meanwhile yet to communicate a way forward for the school following the blaze and has appealed to residents who might have information regarding the incident to come forward.
