Cable theft leaves Bfn woman in dark for ten months | News Article

A woman from the Phase 6 settlement in Bloemfontein, Free State, has told OFM News that she has been without electricity for over ten months now after an electricity cable was stolen in November last year.

Zanele Mngomezulu, who resides at her brother’s house in the area, says she reported the theft to Centlec, which then said it would two months later send someone to replace the stolen cable. OFM News’ Pulane Choane reports that the complainant, however, says after numerous attempts to contact the power utility, she has not yet had anyone call her with regards to the matter and she and others affected by the problem have since had to resort to using candles every day.

Mngomezulu first contacted OFM News in May earlier this year, after which OFM News contacted Centlec spokesperson, Lele Mamatu, to intervene. He then called Mngomezulu, saying he would get someone to contact her. At the time, Mamatu told OFM News that the utility was experiencing a backlog in dealing with matters of this sort. Now, more than three months later, she says she is still in exactly the same position she was when she first reported the problem and cannot even outsource the matter to an electrician as Centlec is the only supplier of the cables in question.

OFM News is waiting for a response  from Centlec.
