UFS finds no proof of alleged rape─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 16:19 Tue, 03 Sep 2019
The University of the Free State (UFS) refutes allegations on social media alleging that an unidentified student at the institution’s Bloemfontein campus was raped on Monday 2 September.
UFS spokesperson, Lacea Loader, states in a press release that no proof of an alleged rape incident in the restrooms of the campus’ Examination Centre (EXR) has been found. She adds that no incident was reported to the “university’s Protection Services or the university’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) since yesterday”.
The institution says there was an incident at the aforementioned centre, where a student fainted while writing a test and had to be attended to by emergency medical personnel.
The allegations began gaining traction on social media amidst outrage at the revelation made in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape on Monday that the University of Cape Town (UCT) student Uyinene “Nene” Mrwetyana was allegedly raped and murdered at the Clareinch Post Office in Claremont, the day she was last seen and reported missing. Reports indicate that the 42-year-old male accused and post office employee who confessed to the crime, lured Mrwetyana, a 19-year old first-year Film and Media Studies student, back to the Post Office after his fellow employees had left the office. Word of her brutal murder and several others have prompted the #AmINext movement.
