Social media users have reacted emotionally to the sad news about the passing of a woman who suffered from hypoxemia, which is an abnormally low level of oxygen in the blood.

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram users expressed their sadness after the news of the 30-year-old Gontlafetse Sehako’s passing and described her as one of the bravest and most amazing people. Gontlafetse, originally thought to be from Magogoe in the North West but who lived in Johannesburg, called herself ‘Miss Oxygen’ with a tagline ‘ICarryHopeInMyLungs’. She broke many hearts in March 2019 when she pleaded for help after her portable oxygen cylinder was damaged.

One of the most prominent South African DJ’s from Botshabelo in the Free State, “Prince Kaybee” offered to give her R11 000 to get the machine fixed. On Twitter, she said she had a chronic illness called pulmonary hypertension.

One of her fans on Facebook, Ultreney le Roux, spoke to OFM News and said she fell in love with Sehako after she learned of her lung condition.

“What’s there to tell? She was so full of life she was full of positivity [and] she was a fighter. She called herself Miss Oxygen with the tagline #ICarryHopeInMyLungs”. Her condition is very rare. She used to have a friend who also passed away - two years ago with the same condition. ‘Eish’ man. she was great, you know, that’s why I wanted to meet her so badly,” she adds.

“She stayed in [Johannesburg] but I’m not quite sure where she worked. I don’t know much about her personally really but I felt like I knew her more than anything though it was only from social media,” she adds further.

“I once invited her for an interview and it never happened because she was in and out of the hospital so we would have gotten more information about her story.” I would at least have more to tell about her but never really got to talk to her. Yah! Well, I am hurt, I am so hurt and more so that I never personally met her,” she adds.

The fan said she has a similar condition but it is not as severe as Sehako’s. She adds that what broke her heart about Sehako is that she lost her mom at an early age.
