Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, says the protest has been prompted by the ending of the contract and money due to these workers. She says according to information received at this stage is that the contractor informed the workers that the contract is ending today and that they will be paid by the end of September. Workers are having none of that.

Funani says, in response to this, irate workers instead burned tyres and barricaded roads with stones and other objects to deter motorists from passing through.

She says the police are currently engaging with the workers and negotiating a possible solution concerning the incident but does not further elaborate if the road is open or still closed. She, however, continues to say that no-one has been arrested at this stage but the public order policing members are on the ground monitoring the situation.
