Two by-elections set for Central SA on Wednesday | News Article

Four political parties will lock horns in the by-elections on Wednesday 18 September 2019 in Central South Africa after both DA councillors in ward 1 and 2 resigned and as a result, left the positions vacant.

Four parties in the JB Marks municipality in ward 2, which include Potchefstroom, and Ward 1, in the Ga-Segonyana Municipality which include Kuruman, will look to snatch both wards from the DA.

North West provincial Chairperson, Tumeloentle Thiba, says Mollelwa Elizabeth Radebe from the ANC, Chris Hattingh from the DA, James Phawe from the EFF, and Johannes Jacobus Laing from the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) will contest this election in JB Marks.

Meanwhile, in Ward 1 in the Northern Cape, four parties which include the ANC, DA, EFF, FF+ and one independent candidate, Maria Elizabeth Kotze, will also compete for the ward.

"The voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 64.81% and the DA candidate won the ward with 57.87% of valid votes,” IEC says. It is understood that the special by-elections were held on Tuesday, 17 September 2019. The ANC’s Esmeralda Deelman, the DA’s Abraham Willem Petrus van der Westhuizen, the EFF’s Magapanyane Andrew Segano, and the FF Plus’ William James Markram will lock horns for this ward. The ward was previously held by the DA councillor and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says the voter turnout for this ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 60% and the DA candidate won the ward with 74.50% of valid votes.
