Man sentenced for death of passenger in Northern Cape | News Article

A 29-year-old man was sentenced to five years imprisonment, suspended for five years, for culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving, Northern Cape police said on Thursday.

Paycheal Coetzee pleaded guilty on all charges and was sentenced by Judge Malcolm View in the Pofadder Regional Court on Wednesday. He was ordered to pay R180,000 to the family of the deceased, Juline Raman, 26, for the loss of financial support.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, said the accused was the driver of his Toyota Corolla and travelled with six other occupants, on the N14 close to Aggenys on November 19, 2017.

The court established that the accused was speeding and lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll. One of the passengers died as a result of the accident and several of the other passengers were injured and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

“All the necessary investigations were done and the accused was ultimately sentenced by Judge Malcolm View in the Pofadder Regional Court,” Kock said.

The Cluster Commander, Brigadier Francis Hender, lauded Detective Sergeant Olebogeng Seetelo from the Aggenys detectives for a job well done.

“May this sentencing serve as a deterrent to other vehicle drivers, to remain within the ambits of the law,  especially as we are approaching the school holidays,” said Hender.
