#KayMotsepeSchoolsCup: Central SA teams knocked out─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 08:47 Fri, 27 Sep 2019
The six school soccer teams from Central South Africa that made it to the national leg of this year’s Kay Motsepe Schools Cup held at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein campus this week have been knocked out of the competition.
The remaining two teams - the Gauteng-based Clapham High School and Siphokuhle Secondary School from Mpumalanga - will battle it out on Friday in Bloemfontein for the coveted prize of R1 million.
The national finals of the tournament sponsored by the Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam, in conjunction with the Basic Education Department and the South African Football Association (Safa), kicked off on Tuesday 24 September at the UFS fields, with eighteen teams from across the country, including six from the North West, Northern Cape and Free State combined. It is alleged the prize is considered the largest in value in Africa at under-19 level. The runners-up, third and fourth-placed teams will receive between R400 000 and R600 000 respectively. The winnings will not be handed over in cash but will be spent on various projects at the schools. Provincial winners will each receive R100 000, despite not making it through to the final game on Friday. Moroka Secondary School from Thaba’Nchu, which was one of a handful of schools who are newcomers to the Cup, was unable to win any of the four matches they played, leaving them at the bottom of Group A.
The Free State provincial champs and hopes for the province, the Unitas High School from Welkom, just missed the final, managing to come second to finalists Clapham in Group D.
