NW set to outline food security measures amid drought─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 10:59 Mon, 07 Oct 2019
Questions regarding food security and the ongoing drought in the North West will this week come under the spotlight.
The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Desbo Mohono, leads the provincial World Food Day Commemoration in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality. This day, commemorated globally on 16 October, is dedicated to tackling global hunger and raising awareness about everyone’s right to access safe, nutritious food.
The North West government has meanwhile confirmed that it will celebrate this day on Friday, ahead of the global commemoration, with the community of Ntswana Le Metsing, at the Magong Village just outside Rustenburg. With the North West being amongst provinces continuing to experiencing drought, Mohono will on Friday not only be expected to encourage residents in this village and neighbouring communities to plant their own gardens and be eco-friendly, but will be expected to outline sustainable food projects delivered by her department. This is coupled with a clear plan of action on how her department plans to deals with drought, eradicate the scourge of poverty, hunger and malnutrition experienced by communities, as well as how they plan on assisting farming communities to ensure food security in the province.
The departmental spokesperson, Emelda Setlhako, in a statement confirms “on the day, local beneficiaries will receive the supplies and the training they need to produce their own food. MEC Mohono will also plant vegetable gardens, hand over production inputs for crop production and outline her department’s programme of action geared at eradicating hunger”.
