Water crisis hits Kimberley─── 09:20 Tue, 08 Oct 2019
A water crisis has hit the community of Sol Plaatje in Kimberley, Northern Cape. A main water pipe that is currently being replaced is affecting the city at large.
According to community members, they have been without water for five days and as a result, scholars were turned back from school on Monday.
In a statement issued by Sello Matsie, spokesperson of the Sol Plaatje Municipality, the challenge they are facing with the installation of the new water pipe, is the main valve. He says other pipes have been pumping water.
These other water pipes are pumping water to communities alternatively and in turns, switching from one pipe to the other. He says the municipality regrets inconveniencing people.
According to media reports, the dam levels are critically low, resulting in the Newton reservoirs being almost dry. The municipality said in order to maintain levels at the Newton Reservoir, they have temporarily switched off pumping. As soon as Riverton resumes pumping, they will switch on Newton to manage the water level.
