The Central University of Technology (CUT) has on Wednesday provided a delegation from the United States Embassy with a sneak-peek of a new bed management system to be unveiled at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein on Thursday 11 October.

Manager of the Product Development Technology Station (PDTS), Marinus Potgieter, revealed in his presentation to a delegation from the United States Consulate, which included Aerospace Engineer and founder of the tech start-up STEMBoard, Aisha Bowe, that they designed the bed management system known as Qcare at the behest of a client based in Port Elizabeth.

Potgieter says the system will not only make it easier for patients to call for help from nursing personnel, but it will also record data pertaining to shift changes and patients. This, in turn, is expected to smoothen shifts for often overworked nurses in state hospitals. Potgieter reveals the system will also be rolled out in other parts of the country, upon the instruction of their client.

Potgieter also managed to display other devices developed by the CUT-based station, which include innovative wheelchairs meant to last even in the most rural of locations. He reveals the life span of a wheelchair in South Africa is three months. He says the wheelchairs are usually imported from Asia. Once the wheelchair is broken, it ends up being thrown away due to the absence of available parts in the country to fix it. Other devices displayed to Bowe include the patient transfer structure and the adult standing frame, amongst others.

The PDTS team will first showcase their devices in an exhibition at CUT on Thursday morning and then move on to Pelonomi, where the Qcare system will be launched.
