Leeudoringstad residents protesting lack of service delivery─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:52 Fri, 11 Oct 2019
Irate residents in the Kgakala location in Leeudoringstad, within the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality in North West, are on the rampage destroying property during a protest.
Police spokesperson, Amanda Funani, tells OFM News that they opened a case of damage to property or infrastructure and public violence. She says according to information, about 50 or more residents have staged a protest over the lack of service delivery and the high rate of unemployment in the area. The local residents tell OFM News that they on Thursday held a community meeting to discuss the ongoing solar plant project near a mine in Orkney in Kanana. Funani says no arrests have been effected at this stage.
OFM News previously reported on a protest action that erupted in Kanana, between Orkney and Klerksdorp, over the construction of a nearby solar powerplant. Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, at the time said disgruntled residents also barricaded roads and burned tyres. OFM News at the time reliably learnt that a group called the Kanana Community Representative was unhappy with the hiring process at the solar plant located near the Tau Lekoamine. It’s alleged a large number of the people employed on-site are from neighbouring Leeudoringstad, as opposed to Kanana, angering the community.
