NW service delivery issues a cause for concern - SAHRC | News Article

The lack of basic services such as water supply and inadequate sanitation are amongst some of the issues continuing to plague communities in the North West.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the province confirms these are amongst some of the most basic human rights violation cases under investigation. The Commission’s Oarabile Gaoraelwe tells OFM News that it has come to light that there are still major challenges with the provision of services in many parts of the province. This, after the commission last week engaged several communities where residents raised pertinent concerns over the lack of refuse collection, shortage of water, bucket toilet systems, and sewage spillage, amongst others. Gaoraelwe says although the main purpose of the engagement was to educate residents about their human rights and the mandate of the commission, it has become clear that there are a number of concerns on the ground and that the residents’ right to live in a safe, clean, healthy environment is not being protected.

He adds that water problems faced in several parts of the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality, such as in Tswelelang, as well as healthcare service issues experienced in the areas of Klerksdorp, have also been of great concern.

The poor state of service delivery and the ailing healthcare system in the North West came under much scrutiny last year following violent service delivery protests and calls for former premier Supra Mahumapelo to resign. This led president Cyril Ramaphosa to place the entire province under administration.

“Other issues that we came across during our engagement, is relating to social security, especially when it comes to grants relating to older persons and minor children. It still is a challenge to receive social grants. Another issue relates to the delay in the payment when they have to go and receive their social grants,” said Gaoraelwe.

He says an assessment of all complaints and investigations is underway.
