Free State Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says the two learners, who are both 16 years old and in grade 10, got into a fight outside the schoolyard at around 14:30.

The suspect stabbed the deceased with a screwdriver in the left side of the neck. The teenager succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The Free State Education Department has identified the deceased as Lungelo Khathane.

Makhele says the reason for the fight is not yet known and an investigation continues. The teenage murder suspect will appear before the Koffiefontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has tweeted about the incident sending his condolences to the learner’s family. This is the fourth violent death involving learners in central South Africa within eleven days.
