#SchoolViolence: Koffiefontein family distraught | News Article

The family of slain 16-year-old Lungelo Khathane, in Koffiefontein in the Free State, says they have been left distraught and shocked at the death of their child.

The uncle of the deceased, who was stabbed by another 16-year old pupil from Reikaeletse Secondary School - Sello Motswahae - told OFM News the incident has left the family with serious pain and sorrow.

He says they are struggling to find words to describe the incident and could only say they are shocked.

Motswahae described Khathane as a boy with a bright future, as he was looking to impress a Bloemfontein rugby club, and the provincial team, in his quest to became a professional rugby player.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, has meanwhile confirmed to OFM News that the 16-year-old pupil has since been arrested in that area, following the murder of his fellow school mate with a screwdriver yesterday after a fight ensued between him and the deceased outside the schoolyard at around 14:30.

Ndaba says the normal procedure following such an incident is that the school’s code of conduct will be followed to address the incident.

Ndaba says the allegations at this stage are that the two boys were fighting over a girl who is in grade 9 at the school. He says the girl, as the rest of the pupils, will also receive counselling. Ndaba says they have been told that Khathane was a very quiet and humble boy. Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has tweeted about the incident, sending his condolences to the learner’s family, friends and teachers. This is the fourth violent death involving learners in central South Africa within eleven days.
