A manhunt has been launched for suspects responsible for malicious vandalism and cable theft, amounting to R70 000 in damages to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, which includes Welkom, in the Free State.

Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says a case of theft of copper cable has been registered and under investigation. He says the case was register day on Friday after more than 50 metres of high cable were stolen at Tempest Road, leaving Reitz Park and surrounding areas without power.

In a statement, the municipality says a fencing palisade at a certain substation in Tempest Road in the area was also stolen. The cost to this damage excluding labour could cost more than the said amount but adds that’s the municipality is working to fix the problem.

This is not the first incident of this kind to hit the municipality.

In July, two people were arrested after they were found in possession of property that belongs to the Municipality. Matjhabeng Fire Chief, Freddy Khuze, told OFM News at the time the suspects were discovered at the Welkom Warriors Club in the city, which falls under the Fire Department, loading corrugated iron sheets onto a bakkie.

Khuze said that when probed by police, the suspects alleged they were picking up the items for three other people.
