Proceedings are underway in the Free State Provincial Legislature where Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) are soon expected to debate a motion to remove colonial symbols at the Fourth Raadsaal in Bloemfontein.

The motion submitted by the EFF to remove statues erected during the Apartheid era and other colonial artefacts, has nonetheless thus far been described by the Freedom Front Plus as a tool to exclude certain cultural groups and as an attack on certain racial groups. The party has accused the EFF of racial polarisation. The EFF Provincial Chairperson, Mandisa Makesini, has meanwhile maintained that it is appalling that none of the artefacts at the Fourth Raadsaal, where legislative decisions are made in the Free State, resemble the diversity of the province nor the role played by several struggle stalwarts in the liberation of the country. The sitting will also see members of the Executive Council give oral replies to questions posed by members of opposition parties.

Amongst those in attendance is the former Speaker of the Legislature, Mamiki Qabathe, who is now MEC for Social Development, ANC Chair and MEC for Police, Sam Mashinini, MEC for Treasury, Gadija Brown, Cogta MEC, Thembeni Ngxangisa, Destea's Makalo Mohale as well as Education's Tate Makgoe.

Makgoe is amongst the MECs not only expected to make statements but give oral reply to questions posed by oppositions as Matric examinations continues.

Questions regarding the lack of safety at schools are amongst those he is expected to address as the province on Tuesday woke up to news that another pupil has been stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow Grade 6 learner.

The incident that claimed the life of a 12-year-old Reatlehile Leeto, follows that of the 16-year-old Lungelo Khathane who was killed by a fellow pupil in Koffiefontein last week.

Leave of absence has been noted for Public Works MEC Tshidi Koloi, Agriculture MEC William Bulwane, and Arts and Culture MEC Dimakatso Mahasa.
