Mayor asks NPO to assist municipality with water crisis─── 05:29 Thu, 24 Oct 2019
The executive mayor of the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality in the Free State, Masetjhaba Mosia Lekaje, has resorted to asking non-profit organisation, Gift of the Givers, to drill boreholes for communities.
The municipality, which serves Harrismith, Kestell, and Phuthaditjhaba, is facing a serious water crisis - with taps running dry for two weeks and counting.
The struggling municipality’s residents are saying that they cannot endure this prolonged water shortage any longer.
Despite water trucks providing water to communities, some residents are complaining about the scheduled hours to issue the water.
Meanwhile, other residents complain that water truck drivers make demands from them.
The municipality says Fika Patso Dam, which feeds 80% of the Maluti-a-Phofung community, is almost dry.
