#SchoolViolence: Legal glitches delay Koffiefontein murder case | News Article

A legal issue in the case of the state against a Reikaeletse Secondary School pupil, aged 16, who is accused of murdering fellow 16-year-old Lungelo Khetshane in Koffiefontein in the Free State, has seen the case been delayed twice.

The suspect, who reportedly stabbed and killed Khatshane, appeared twice in court but glitches in the defence had forced the postponement of his plea for bail application.

A spokesperson for the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) says the accused is still consulting with his legal representative, whom he only had a chance to meet yesterday.

He says as such the two had to be offered a chance to consult and prepare for his defence against the charge, and his case was posted to Monday 28 October for a formal bail application.

OFM News earlier reported police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele said the minor’s case was postponed on Wednesday to provide him an opportunity to obtain legal counsel.

He said the boy was remanded in custody at the Grootvlei prison’s juvenile section, until his next court appearance next week.

As he is a minor, the grade 10 learner’s name cannot be revealed.

The accused is alleged to have stabbed Khatshane with a screwdriver in a moment of rage. The alleged cause of the altercation is yet to be revealed by police.

Khathane died later in the Pelonomi Hospital. Word of Khathane’s death gained traction around the town and on social media.
