The eight protestors arrested on Tuesday during ongoing turmoil in Boitumelong Township near Bloemhof, North West, will appear in the Local Magistrate's Court today.

These eight will appear on charges of public violence after they went on the rampage.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says the violence in that area, which led to a shut down of the town, was sparked by the arrest of 23 people two weeks ago for various crimes which include kidnapping, assault, and murder.

Meanwhile, one suspect who is said to be a scholar yesterday appeared in court and was denied bail. The case was postponed to November.

On Tuesday night, residents pelted two trucks and one vehicle with stones. Mokgwabone told OFM News that these residents further blockaded the N12 Highway linking Klerksdorp and Christiana.

On Wednesday Mokgowabone urged motorists to exercise caution, including on the R34 between Schweizer-Reneke and Bloemhof, which still has some barricades.

In the meantime, the Provincial Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, cautioned that the police will not hesitate to pursue and take drastic action against any person who disrespects the rule of law through violent community protests.

She urged members of the community to refrain from damaging essential infrastructure as well as disrupting services and schooling.
