Employees of the Spanish-owned renewable solar energy company, Abengoa Solar Plant in Upington in the Northern Cape, affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is expected to embark on a strike today.
According to Numsa national spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, their members are demanding a 13th cheque and housing allowance.
Hlubi-Majola also stated that employees earn a basic salary and as a result of strike action last year, they would not enjoy medical aid and provident fund today. She further added that this course of action is driven by the employer’s alleged unwillingness to meet employees’ demands.
