Mkhwebane set to engage FS residents | News Article

A lack of water supply and inadequate sanitation in the Free State are amongst some of the pressing issues expected to come under scrutiny when Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, engages residents in the province.

She will this week embark on a roadshow programme to the Free State where she is expected to engage residents regarding service delivery issues. Her visit is expected to kick off tomorrow at Dipelaneng Community Hall where residents in Mantsopa Local Municipality will be able to voice their concerns. Her engagement with community members will then be followed by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Free State Legislature where the two bodies will commit themselves to work hand-in-hand in investigating cases of wrong-doing in all spheres of government.

Her visit to the province comes just days after the State Capture Commission of Inquiry heard testimony from the former Free State Agriculture Head, Peter Thabethe, regarding the controversial Vrede Dairy project, which is also under her office’s investigation.

She is yet to release a report on this Gupta-linked project after she got under fire for failing to indicate the role played by politicians in her first report.

Acting Communications Manager in the Provincial Legislature, Maroele Seruoe, in a statement says the signing of the MOU will strengthen working relations between the two bodies and commit both of them to prioritise cases under investigation.

Mkhwebane’s office also confirms “issues raised by the communities, as well as matters related to the Executive Members' Ethics Code (EMEA), will be brought to the attention of the provincial executive during a meeting with Premier Sisi Ntombela and her cabinet in Bloemfontein on Wednesday”.
