Human Settlements engages FS residents | News Article

The Department of Human Settlements is urging residents in the Free State to contribute to the formulation of the Housing Consumer Protection Bill.

This, as the department today holds a public participation meeting in Bethlehem where community members are expected to raise their concerns. The Bill seeks to repeal the existing Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act by responding to challenges experienced in the house building industry and meet the concerns of housing consumers. Tshepo Nkosi from the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), an agency of the department, tells OFM News that the main aim is to assist and protect consumers from any unscrupulous builders.

The new Bill, once passed as an Act, will allow the NHBRC more efficiency in holding builders and contractors accountable and ensure they abide by set standards and regulations.

Nkosi says the roadshow is also to give builders and local municipalities a platform to voice their views regarding the Bill.

“People are invited to voice their views and understand what the new Housing Consumer Protection Bill will mean for them in terms of further protection from errant home builders and other bad things that might happen during the building of a home,” he said.

Nkosi alludes that they will take the national roadshow to Bloemfontein on Wednesday.
