#SchoolViolence: Koffiefontein pupil and murder suspect out on R200 bail─── LUCKY NKUYANE 05:50 Thu, 14 Nov 2019
A 16-year old Koffiefontein pupil accused of killing a fellow grade 10 learner, Lungelo Ketshane, outside the Reikaletse Secondary School in the Free State last month, has been released on R200 bail.
The suspect yesterday appeared before the Local Magistrate's Court to face a charge of murder, following his arrest in October.
He is said to have stabbed Ketshane with a screwdriver outside the school premises after a fight broke out between them.
Ketshane was declared dead at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein a day after being admitted.
The suspect, who was kept at Grootvlei's Prison Juvenile section, had his court appearance postponed at least two times following legal counsel glitches.
The matter has since been postponed to January 29, 2020.
The police are yet to comment on the cause of the fight between the two that led to Ketshane's fatal stabbing.
Ketshane was laid to rest in October, and his fellow pupils held a memorial service in honour of him. Residents also held a prayer session at Diamanthoogte Combined School to pray for both the family of Ketshane and the accused.
The deceased's family told OFM News that they were left distraught and shocked at the death of their child. His uncle, Sello Motswahae, said the incident has left the family with serious pain and sorrow and they further struggled to find words to describe the incident.
The death of Ketshane came amidst a spate of school violence incidents that saw the deaths of several pupils in Central South Africa within eleven days in October.
