Corruption in NW in the spotlight | News Article

The state of corruption in the North West is set to be in the spotlight on Thursday 14 November during an Anti-corruption Community Roadshow by the office of the premier, Job Mokgoro, amongst others.

The roadshow will be held by the Madibeng Local Municipality in conjunction with the office of Mokgoro and the Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. The municipality is among the four municipalities in the province which illegally invested R314 million with the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank. The purpose of the roadshow is to, among others, drive a social aversion towards corruption, motivate the reporting of fraud and corruption, make citizens aware of their rights and improve citizen involvement in municipal governance. This comes amidst a great concern about the fraud and corruption in local municipalities and provincial government entities in which most of them are in a state of collapse and dire financial stress.

Mokgoro is expected to form part of the roadshow which will start at 09h00 at the main municipal building in Brits and move to Behrens Taxi Rank where the entourage will interact with commuters, hawkers and taxi drivers. In a statement, the municipal spokesperson, Tumelo Tshabalala, says the motorcade will then move to the Brits Driver’s License Centre before making a stopover at the Alfa Crossing (Cnr of R566 & R511). He adds that the motorcade will later move to Letlhabile with stopovers at Letlhabile Mall and Letlhabile Square (Shopping Centre). “The formal programme will take place at Letlhabile Community Hall where Premier Mokgoro is expected to give a Keynote address. This will be followed by presentations by the Road Accident Fund (RAF), SIU, Directorate for Priority Crime (Hawks), and the Master of the High Court, North West,” he further adds. Tshabalala says the municipality has meanwhile taken a lead in the fight against corruption and created a hotline number where members of the public can call in and report any form of corruption.
