#SchoolViolence: Bfn teacher accused of rape out on bail | News Article

The aftercare teacher (28) accused of raping a 13-year-old boy from the Brandwag Primary School, was released on R500 bail in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court and the matter was further postponed to 16 January 2020.

The prosecutor, Johan de Vries, told magistrate Ryan Ishmail that the state was not opposing her bail application. However, De Vries told Ishmail that the state is aware of some of the information at the centre of the incident. The teacher cannot be named yet.

De Vries said according to some of the claims made by the defence, the woman and the boy went to a local park where alcohol was consumed. They went to a flat afterwards where the incident allegedly occurred on Friday 15 November. Before granting bail of R500, Ishmail explained it would not have been in the interest of justice to set an unrealistically high amount as the suspect’s counsel indicated that the accused earns R2400 monthly. Ishmail then made an order and instructed the woman not to contact the victim or even the state witnesses in the matter and set her bail at the said amount. The matter was postponed for further investigation.

The teacher was since suspended by the Department of Education. Yesterday, police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele told OFM News that the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit was investigating the case, following her arrest on Tuesday.

At the same time, the Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has expressed his disgust at the alleged Brandwag rape incident. Makgoe further said he was thankful for and satisfied with the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, who was hired by the School Governing Body (SGB). Makhele confirmed a case of rape against the after-care teacher was opened at the Park Road Police Station.
