NC fails to deal with poor performance, transgressions - AG─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 08:03 Fri, 22 Nov 2019
No major strides have been made in the audit outcomes of the Northern Cape.
This is according to the Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu.
In his 2018/19 national and provincial audit outcomes report, Makwetu has highlighted that the Northern Cape is among the provinces that are failing to address issues related to accountability and financial control measures.
He says this province has once again recorded regressions in two departments, with no indication of improvements as it did in the previous year.
The province, known for being home to the much publicised Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project - an international effort to build the world's largest radio telescope - and other world-class projects, has recorded an irregular expenditure of R584,9 million.
"The leadership remains slow to stress our continued calls for improved controls and consequences for transgressions and poor performance," said Makwetu.
He further highlighted that the provincial leadership has in the past made several commitments, which seldom materialised.
Makwetu stated that greater efforts are needed to improve audit outcomes in this province and cautioned that high levels of irregular expenditure and widespread non-compliance with supply chain procedures is becoming typical of a number of departments countrywide.
