Bloemfontein police confirm no arrests have been made in connection with the alleged rape and murder of an unknown woman whose naked body was found in Namibia township on Saturday.

Police spokesperson, Ikobeng Hlubi, says there are no further updates in the case.

The unknown victim’s naked body was reportedly discovered by a passer-by on Saturday morning, with her clothes lying next to her. It is believed she was raped, before the assailant beat her to death with a rock lying nearby.

The OFM News team was at the scene of the crime while authorities were busy conducting investigations next to the M10 road, passing Lemo Mall, where a crowd of people could be seen surrounding the cordoned off crime scene. This, while the country is in the midst of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

In late 2018, following outrage over the scourge of violence against women and children, President Cyril Ramaphosa held the National Summit against Gender-based Violence and femicide to find solutions to the problem. In response to the call for more to be done, a Gender Based Violence and Femicide Steering Committee was formed. This committee put a 10-year National Strategic Plan on Gender Based Violence and Femicide together. The South African Forensic Nursing Association (Safna) told OFM News previously that forensic nurses must be placed at the centre of this plan, so that it can be strengthened.
