The Free State Police in the Mangaung area, which includes Bloemfontein, are in search of a missing 3-year-old, Amogelang Ntsane.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says Ntsane was reported missing since Monday 2 December. He says the toddler was last seen playing with his friends in Phase 9 near Rekgone Primary School in the Bloemspruit area. He adds that his mother, later on, went looking for him and unfortunately she could not find him anywhere. Eventually, a report of a missing person was opened.

Meanwhile, eNCA recently reported that kidnappings have shown a marked increase in recent years in South Africa, where the criminals are now preying on ordinary citizens, including teenagers and children.

It further reports official police statistics show kidnapping skyrocketing by 139% in the last decade and there appears to be a trend towards opportunistic abductions for quick ransom payments via e-wallets.

“Based on the latest police statistics, about 16 people are kidnapped or abducted in South Africa daily. Not all end in a ransom demand. However, the growing trend of opportunistic kidnappings is an increasing concern for authorities,” eNCA reports.

Makhele says on the day of Amogelang’s disappearance, he was wearing a navy blue pyjama top with yellow stars, and black track pants, with grey sandals. “If you have seen Amogelang, please contact your nearest police station or investigating officer at the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit on the following numbers – 051-406-4401 or 073-109-3300,” he adds.

Ntsane’s disappearance comes amidst the national observation of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, including women and children.
