A Free State couple suspected to have been involved in a farm attack and robbery on 28 November at Doringpan Farm, Bultfontein, has been arrested.

Police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, says the members of Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) arrested two suspects, one male and one female, both aged 34 years, in the early hours of Monday morning 2 December. He says the gun found in their possession is believed to have been used in one of the incidents where stokvel savings were taken at gunpoint. He adds that following a gunpoint robbery at Doringpan farm, the police’s preliminary investigation led to an address at the Masimong Flats where the two suspects were arrested. Thakeng says an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, explosives and an undisclosed amount of cash, amongst others, were discovered and seized by the Welkom police. The suspects face three charges involving the possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen property, and armed robbery.

“They were both detained at the Hennenman Police Station and will appear at the Hennenman Magistrate’s Court soon,” Thakeng adds. Meanwhile, the Welkom Cluster Commander, Lerato Molale, praised the members of the Anti-Gang Unit for a job well done and the positive attitude in ensuring that the residents are safe.
