FS welcomes new Police Commissioner | News Article

The Free State Provincial Police Commissioner, Moeketsi Sempe, has moved up the ranks and will serve in the post of Divisional Commissioner for Visible Policing as of 2020.

Sempe’s position will be filled by Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, who is currently serving as the North West Provincial Police Commissioner.

Sempe took over the reins of the Free State Provincial Police Commissioner in 2018 after having served as the Deputy Provincial Commissioner since January 2012. His knowledge and wealth of expertise in the police force extend over 26 years. He is in possession of a National Diploma in Police Management, a B-Tech degree in Policing and an M-Tech degree in Policing.

His successor, Motswenyane, who has more than 30 years’ work experience in the SAPS and holds a National Diploma in Police Administration, a Postgraduate Diploma in Genetics and a B-Tech degree in Policing, is expected to enhance accountability, provide structure as well as command in the province whilst Sempe takes up his new position.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, who has served as a station commander for several stations in the North West, will as of January take up the North West Provincial Police Commissioner’s position.

The crime-ridden Western Cape will on the one end be led by Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata, who joined the SAPS in 1985 and has more than 34 years’ service.

Police Minister Bheki Cele announced that “these changes have been made following extensive consultation and in line with the South African Police Service’s Turnaround Vision aimed at responding directly to the service's core mandate as enshrined in the Constitution of preventing, combatting and investigating crime to ultimately ensure that the people of South Africa are and feel safe”.

He added that the new management team is expected to add tremendous value towards achieving the SAPS’ service delivery agreement of combatting crime and ensuring that the people of South Africa are safe.
