FS man arrested for clocking 248km/h in a 100km/h zone─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:51 Fri, 13 Dec 2019
A 53-year-old biker will on Friday 13 December appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court in the Free State after he was busted for driving at a speed of 248 kilometres per hour in a 100km/h zone.
The Provincial Department of Transport’s spokesperson, Hillary Mophete, says the man was apprehended on Thursday, 12 December 2019, just after 16:00, on the R730 between Odendaalsrus and Welkom. The man was driving a Suzuki motorbike.
She adds that a case was opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the suspect was detained. He was charged with exceeding the speed limit, reckless driving and driving without a valid driver’s licence for the motorbike.
Mophete says the department will clamp down on lawlessness in the province and further says road users who do not respect and abide by the rules of the road will know no mercy.
Meanwhile, the departmental MEC, Sam Mashinini, has applauded the arrest of the suspect. "We applaud the good work done by men and women in brown,” he adds. "We know that they sacrifice the time they should be spending with loved ones during the festive season to make sure that there is visibility on the Free State roads and that all arrive alive at their destinations,” Mashinini added.
